TBI: TBI Warns Of Continued and Growing Threat Of Financial Sextortion Targeting Children and Teens

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) recently released new data highlighting the continued and growing threat of financial sextortion targeting children and teens.

In 2025 alone, NCMEC received more than 50,000 reports of financially motivated sextortion. That’s an average of 137 reports every day. This represents a dramatic increase from the more than 36,000 reports received in 2024, underscoring the rapidly growing scale of this crime.

“While the newly released numbers are deeply concerning, unfortunately, we are not at all surprised. Those are national statistics. Currently, our four agents assigned to investigate these types of crimes are collectively trying to identify and locate more than 150 child victims of sextortion. Those are just the cases in the state of Tennessee assigned to TBI,” said Assistant Special Agent in Charge Robert Burghardt, who oversees the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Squad.

Typically, the predator and the child are the only people who know about the abuse until it is reported to law enforcement.

“This leaves the child carrying an overwhelming emotional burden on their own. Unfortunately, the predators often encourage their victims to commit suicide and some feel like that is their only choice when faced by the threat of having their nude photographs shared with friends and family,” said Burghardt.

Additionally, NCMEC is reporting changes in how offenders are targeting their victims. Many are acting more quickly, moving their conversations to private messaging and encrypted apps, making it more difficult to detect their crimes.

“Education is our strongest defense against financial sextortion. Parents and caregivers need to have conversations with their children about sextortion before a crisis happens,” said Burghardt. “Every child should know two things: if it happens, tell a trusted adult immediately, and never pay or cooperate with a blackmailer. Giving in rarely ends the abuse. It almost always encourages more demands.”

If a child in your life is victimized, immediately report it to your local law enforcement agency and submit a tip to NCMEC at https://report.cybertip.org/

Warren/McMinnville: Police Need Help Identifying Suspect

On June 27, 2026, deputies with the Warren County Sheriff's Office responded to the Dollar General located at 4763 Smithville Highway after receiving a report that a store employee had been struck by a vehicle. During the investigation, deputies learned that a white male entered the store and used the restroom before leaving. Shortly afterward, another customer alerted the store manager, Brent Clarida, that the man had allegedly stolen a six-pack of Coca-Cola. Mr. Clarida went outside in an attempt to stop the suspect and stood in front of the suspect's gold Jeep. Instead of stopping, the suspect accelerated the vehicle toward Mr. Clarida, striking him before fleeing the scene outbound on Smithville Highway. The Warren County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's assistance in identifying the individual responsible. If you recognize the suspect or have any information related to this incident, please contact Investigator Spencer Pryor at the Warren County Sheriff's Office, (931) 473-7864.

Rutherford: TDOT To Close State Route 99 at Veterans Parkway in July

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) will conduct a two-phase closure of Veterans Parkway in Rutherford County.

Starting Monday, July 6, through Friday, July 24, crews will close the south side of Veterans Parkway in both directions from the intersection at State Route (SR) 99 (New Salem Highway) to Armstrong Valley Road.

Motorists traveling southbound on Veterans Parkway will detour east at the Veterans Parkway/Highway 99 intersection to St. Andrews Drive, traveling south to re-enter Veterans Parkway.

Motorists traveling northbound on Veterans Parkway will detour north at St. Andrews Drive to New Salem Highway/SR 99, traveling west to re-enter Veterans Parkway. A temporary signal will be installed at the intersection of SR 99 and Armstrong Valley Road.

Message boards notifying the motoring public of the Veterans Parkway detour were placed in advance on:

·         Shelbyville Hwy/SR 231, north and south of Veterans Parkway

·         Veterans Pkwy north and south of Hwy 99

·         New Salem Hwy/SR 99 east and west of the detoured intersection

Starting Friday, July 24, through Friday, July 31, crews will close the north side of Veterans Parkway in both directions from the intersection at New Salem Highway to Old Salem Road.

Motorists traveling southbound on Veterans Parkway will detour east at Old Salem Road to New Salem Hwy/SR 99, traveling west to re-enter Veterans Parkway. A temporary signal will be installed at the intersection of SR 99 and Old Salem Road

These closures are necessary to raise and rebuild the intersection of New Salem Highway at Veterans Parkway as part of Phase 3 of TDOT’s New Salem Highway (SR 99) Widening Project. Once the intersection is rebuilt, contractors will have completed a major milestone in this project.

Phase 3 of TDOT’s New Salem Highway (SR 99) Widening Project began in February 2025 and covers approximately 2.4 miles from west of Veterans Parkway to Cason Lane. The project transforms this stretch of SR 99 from a two-lane highway to a five-lane highway. Construction is estimated to be completed by December 2027.

All work is weather-dependent. As always, drivers are reminded to allow additional time, slow down, and move over when traveling through a work zone. The Move Over Law was passed in 2006. The penalty for violating the law in Tennessee includes the possibility of up to 30 days in jail and a maximum fine of $500.

Coffee/Tullahoma: Dishon Named Tullahoma Airport Manager

The City of Tullahoma has named Gavin Dishon as Airport Manager at Tullahoma Municipal

Airport/William Northern Field, City Administrator Jeff Damron announced at the June 22 nd

Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting.

Dishon brings more than five years of hands-on experience at the airport, where he began as an

Airport Service Specialist before advancing to Interim Assistant Airport Manager. A private pilot

who learned to fly at William Northern Field, Dishon has spent his career at the airport

developing deep knowledge of daily airfield operations, fueling and FBO oversight, regulatory

compliance, staff training, and emergency preparedness. He has served as the interim airport

manager since March.

“I am truly honored and grateful for the opportunity to serve Tullahoma as Airport Manager,”

said Dishon. “I have dedicated myself over the past five years to make our airport the best it can

be. I am proud of the progress we have achieved together.”

Dishon holds an Associate of Science degree, Cum Laude, from Motlow State Community

College, and holds FAR Part 139.321 certification, ACE certification through Titan Aviation

Fuels, and HAZMAT Shipping certification. He is a member of both the American Association

of Airport Executives and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. Dishon expressed his

enthusiasm for the role and the airport's future.

“I look forward to building on that momentum alongside our outstanding airport staff and other

city departments,” he stated. “I remain committed to upholding the highest standards of safety,

service, and professionalism while striving for excellence in everything we do. This airport

means a great deal to me, and I am excited for what the future holds.”

During increased airport traffic during the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, Gavin led the

airport staff in marshaling and parking the additional air traffic, assisting flight crews, cargo

management, and calculating fuel needs. Tullahoma Airport Authority Chairman Karla Smith

stated that ‘watching this team of four operate was like watching a well-oiled machine.’

“I could not be prouder of this team and the way they are working together under Gavin's

leadership,” she added. “Their professionalism, teamwork, and dedication are a reflection of the

high standards we strive for at the airport and a credit to the City of Tullahoma.”

City Administrator Jeff Damron also praised Dishon’s performance. "Gavin has already shown a

strong commitment to the airport and the community it serves,” said Damron. “I am excited to

see him step into this leadership role and continue moving the airport forward while building on

the great work that has already been done.”

Tullahoma Municipal Airport is a public-use general aviation airport serving Coffee County and

the surrounding region. The airport is home to more than 160 based aircraft, supports

approximately 30,000 flight operations annually, and generates an estimated $21 million in

regional economic impact.

Wilson/Lebanon: Field of Flags Held at Wilson County Fairgrounds

The Wilson County Mayor’s Office is pleased to announce that the annual Field of Flags will be held at the James E. Ward Agricultural Center, located at 945 Baddour Parkway in Lebanon, now through July 5th.

True to its name, the Field of Flags features a large, rectangular display of hundreds of United States flags. Visitors are invited to walk among the flags and read the personalized tags attached to each one. Although simple in concept, the Field of Flags carries a profound meaning. Established by veterans, the display serves as a heartfelt tribute to the men and women who have served our nation. It offers a meaningful opportunity to honor those who have fought for our freedoms and those who continue to serve and protect our country today.
This event also serves as a fundraiser supporting the Veteran Service Organizations (V.S.O.s) in Lebanon and Wilson County. Community members may participate by adopting or fostering a flag, with proceeds benefiting American Legion Post 15; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5015; Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 1004; and the Associates Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 1004, Inc. Contributions help provide veterans with assistance for rent, utilities, food, and other essential needs.
The Field of Flags will follow this schedule:
June 30: field open 1400 – 1900
July 1: field open 1400 – 1900
July 2: field open 1400 – 1900
July 3: field open 1400 – 1900
July 4: field open 1400 – 1800: Closing Ceremony 1700
July 5: field open 1400 – 1900
The American flag may have changed throughout the years, but its core elements have remained the same. In 1777, the Continental Congress passed an act establishing an official flag for the United States, which said: “Resolved, that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.” Just as the white stars on the blue background represent a new constellation, each component of “Old Glory” has its own significance. Red was chosen because it represents hardiness, valor, courage, and readiness to sacrifice. The color white stands for purity and innocence. Pure, because we are independent from other countries and hold true to our ideals. Blue signifies justice for all, as well as vigilance and perseverance.
“The American flag not only symbolizes our nation, but also the spirit, hopes, and values of its people. The Field of Flags is a powerful tribute and an excellent way to support our local veterans. I encourage everyone to visit the fairgrounds and experience the inspiring display of hundreds of flags throughout the 4th of July weekend.” – Randall Hutto, Wilson County Mayor

Rutherford/Murfreesboro: Teens Arrested In Smash and Grab Burglary

Murfreesboro Police Department crime data analysts utilized automatic license plate reader (ALPR) technology to aid in the arrest of two teenagers for two separate smash-and-grab burglaries. Detectives have also taken out juvenile petitions on a third teen. The burglaries resulted in the theft of dozens of firearms in May and June.

Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) and the Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosive (ATF) assisted in capturing one burglar in Davidson County on Monday, June 1. The 17-year-old faces 40 felony charges, including 36 counts of theft of a firearm, burglary, theft over $10,000, theft over $2,500, and vandalism over $10,000.  Authorities also interviewed a 15-year-old who surrendered to Murfreesboro police on Tuesday, June 2.  He's facing the same charges, plus others.  Detectives have secured juvenile petitions for a second 15-year-old, who is currently in custody at the Davidson County Juvenile Detention Center on unrelated charges.

The teens, along with several others, allegedly rammed a stolen Kia Sol into the side door of Mid Tenn's Pawn & Loan on Northwest Broad Street at about 3:30 a.m. on Monday, June 1. Officers discovered several glass display cases broken and three dozen firearms missing. Surveillance footage shows seven people involved in the burglary.

Crime data analysts from the Murfreesboro Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center reviewed private ALPR video from a Nashville condominium complex. The analysts noticed a Honda CR-V circling the parking lot before the two Kias were stolen. A tag number from the Honda CR-V led authorities to one of the teens' homes, where several of the stolen firearms were recovered.

The 15-year-old who surrendered is also suspected of a similar burglary at Black Frog Arms & Range on North Thompson Lane around 3:40 a.m. on May 2. In that incident, burglars also drove a stolen Kia Sol into the business's front doors and stole multiple firearms. He is facing 26 additional felony charges for the Black Frog burglary.

Murfreesboro Police Department Property Crimes detectives continue to investigate both burglaries. They are working to identify the other suspects involved in both incidents.

The 17-year-old and 15-year-old were booked into the Rutherford County Juvenile Detention Center.  Both appeared before a juvenile court magistrate for a detention hearing on Wednesday, June 3.  They will remain in custody until their next hearing, scheduled for September 21.

Coffee/Tullahoma: Reba Films For ABC Special At Beechcraft Heritage Museum

The Beechcraft Heritage Museum at Tullahoma Municipal Airport served as a filming location earlier this month for "Disney Celebrates America: Nashville's Star-Spangled Bash," a live television event commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States.

Country music superstar Reba McEntire was on site at the museum in early June to film a segment for the special, which will air Saturday, July 4, at 8 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. CT on ABC, Disney+, ESPN App, Freeform, FX, Hulu and National Geographic. McEntire previewed her appearance during a recent interview, hinting at a dramatic aviation-themed entrance for her performance.

"My friends, my family, my fans are so excited, the ones that I've told what I'm getting to do," McEntire said in the interview with WKRN News 2. "Walking to the stage area like I am going to get to do, it's going to be a thrill for me."

Producers' selection of the Beechcraft Heritage Museum reflects the museum's national reputation as the world's premier collection of Beech aircraft and its role in preserving American aviation history. The museum, located on the grounds of Tullahoma Municipal Airport, draws aviation enthusiasts and visitors from across the country each year.

"Having a production of this scale choose Tullahoma is a tremendous honor for our community," said City Administrator Jeff Damron. "It speaks to the unique character of the Beechcraft Heritage Museum, our airport, and it puts a national spotlight on what makes Tullahoma special as we join the country in celebrating America's 250th birthday."

Hosted by Ryan Seacrest and broadcast live from downtown Nashville, the three-hour special will feature performances from Tim McGraw, Reba McEntire, Nick Jonas, Boyz II Men, Brothers Osborne, Clint Black, Lauren Daigle, Little Big Town, NE-YO and others, accompanied by the Grammy Award-winning Nashville Symphony. The program will also include one of the largest fireworks and drone shows in the United States.

Hundreds of thousands of spectators are expected to gather in person in downtown Nashville, with millions more tuning in nationwide across the broadcast and streaming platforms. Residents and visitors are encouraged to tune in July 4 to see Tullahoma represented on the national stage.
