Rutherford County: K9 Deputy and K9 Attain National Certification

K9 Deputy Joseph Rigsby and K9 Crash completed 16 weeks of patrol dog training and earned certification from the United States Police Canine Association, a Sheriff’s sergeant said.

The certification consists of obedience, evidence search, suspect search and criminal apprehension, said K9 Sgt. David Ashburn.

“Certifying together is a significant accomplishment and I'm proud of the dedication that Rigsby and Crash have shown throughout the process,” Ashburn said. “Not everything was easy but they have both learned valuable lessons and I am excited to see what they will become.”

Lt. Scott Martin said Deputy Rigsby and K9 Crash have started to build a special bond that will make them a great team and an addition to the Sheriff’s Office.

“Deputy Rigsby and K9 Crash, Sgt. Ashburn and K9 Deputy Brandon Bains have put in a tremendous amount of work over the past 16 weeks and I am very proud of their dedication and success in getting USPCA certified,” Martin said.

Crash will serve in dual positions as a patrol and narcotics K9.

Ashburn said Rigsby served as an SRO 14 years before transferring to the K9 Unit in January. K9 Crash is a 18-month-old Belgian Malinois from Adlerhorst K9.

“Our K9's are more than working dogs,” Ashburn said. “They are highly trained partners committed to protecting the citizens of Rutherford County.
