Coffee/Manchester: Two Millenium Repertory Company Production Auditions Announced

The Picture of Dorian Gray

adapted by Robert Kauzlaric

from the novel by Oscar Wilde

Directed by Gianna Afflerbaugh

Saturday, July 19,  2 PM

Monday, July 21, 6 PM

Performance dates

October 17 - 19, 24 - 26

9 to 16 actors needed. Ages 16 and up, please.

Auditions will consist of reads from the script; sides are available here.

Please come to auditions prepared to list any conflicts between late July and late October. Tech week (October 12 - 16) is mandatory.

Originally a novel by Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray is a story of vanity, unrequited love, and the corruptive influence of hedonism. This adaptation by Robert Kauzlaric views Dorian’s story through the eyes of those most profoundly affected by him.

After Basil Hallward immortalizes Dorian’s beauty on canvas, Dorian wishes to remain eternally youthful while the portrait ages instead - the result of a Faustian bargain. Through the manipulative guidance of Lord Henry Wotton, Dorian destroys everyone he touches with his ruthless pursuit of pleasure, while Basil’s portrait of Dorian reflects the consequences of his vices.

Note: This show contains graphic depictions of suicide and murder, along with a brief mention of sexual assault. Themes of prostitution and drug use are explored.

Queer themes are present throughout. Anyone uncomfortable depicting gay relationships is encouraged not to audition for Dorian Gray, Basil Hallward, or Alan Campbell.

Character Descriptions

*Two different actors represent this character.

British accents are encouraged for cold reads.

Dorian Gray -a physically beautiful young man, naive and good-hearted until corrupted by vanity.

*Lord Henry Wotton (Elder + Younger) - a champion of sensual pleasure, notorious among London's high society for his dazzling conversation and brazenly immoral views. He values beauty above all else and is chiefly responsible for Dorian's corruption.

*Basil Hallward (Elder + Younger) - a painter who meets Dorian at a party and is fascinated by the young man’s beauty.

*Alan Campbell (Elder + Younger) - a talented chemist and musician who is close to Dorian until their relationship comes to a bitter end due to Dorian's increasingly erratic behavior.

*James Vane (Elder + Younger) - Sibyl's younger, fiercely protective brother, who leaves England to become a sailor. He is suspicious of his sister's lover and swears to hunt the man down if he causes her any harm.

Sybil Vane - a beautiful young Shakespearean actress and Dorian's bride-to-be.

Parker - Basil Hallward’s servant.

Lord Fermor  - an idle, impatient aristocrat, a portrait of a typical self-centered, elderly aristocrat whose money allows him to devote his life to purely fanciful and superficial endeavors.

Victor - Dorian's faithful first servant, of whom he is unnecessarily suspicious.

Francis -  Dorian’s second and last servant.

Mary - an opium addict.

Sir Geoffrey Clouston  - a London socialite.

Assorted Londoners - party guests, society members, opium addicts, hunters, etc. (non-speaking)

Rutherford/La Vergne: Officers Quickly Respond To Domestic Violence Call

Early this morning, La Vergne officers responded to a call involving a domestic violence incident. A female caller reported that her boyfriend, physically assaulted her by smashing a beer can into her face and breaking a car window where she and her child were sleeping. The suspect also reportedly had a firearm in his backpack and fled the scene in a spray-painted pickup truck.

Thanks to the swift actions and coordination of our patrol officers, detectives, K9 unit, drone operators, and support from partnering agencies, a thorough search was initiated. The suspect was ultimately located and taken into custody without further incident.
Given the suspect’s prior threats, known warrants, and his attempt to evade law enforcement, the situation was treated with the utmost seriousness. SWAT was deployed, a command post was established, and containment was secured. Negotiators successfully made contact, and after a coordinated effort, the suspect surrendered peacefully and was transported for booking.
This was a dynamic and potentially dangerous situation that could have ended much differently. We are proud of the professional, measured response by all involved. The victim is safe and receiving support.
The safety of our residents remains our top priority. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Help is available.

Rutherford/La Vergne: Dash Cam Footage Needed In Fatal Shooting

Parents of victim killed in I-24 shooting mourn son, ask for information
Mother Katrina Leonard’s son, Noah Taylor, cuddled with his dog Friday night before waking up to go to work Saturday morning.
She told him she loved him as he left home at 7:13 a.m. to work at CarTronics in Nashville where he just passed a test for advancement.
“Love you too, Mom,” Taylor replied.
Taylor, 22, of Smyrna died within 45 minutes later after he was shot and killed while driving on Interstate 24 between Waldron Road and the Rutherford-Davidson County line.
“I am so thankful and grateful I had that moment with him,” Leonard said as she become overcome with tears.
She and her husband, Scott Leonard, Taylor’s father Scot Taylor, and children Josh and Hannah mourn for Taylor.
Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating Noah Taylor’s death.
She urged people who witnessed the shooting or drivers who have dash cam video to contact Sheriff’s Detective Thomas Burnett at 615-904-3052 and leave a message.
The family is offering a $2,000 reward and Rutherford County Crime Stoppers is offering a reward up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the person responsible for the death. People may call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 615-893-STOP (7867).
Information and dash camera video might help the investigation and bring justice to the family, she said.
Burnett said detectives request dash cam video from drivers traveling between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Saturday on Interstate 24 from the Interstate 840 entrance to the Bell Road exit in Nashville.
Noah attended Rock Springs Elementary School and Rocky Fork Middle School where he played football. An elementary school teacher and his middle school coach reached out to his mother after his death.
“He touched so many lives,” his mother said.
Noah’s father, Scot, who lives in Kansas, last communicated with his son by texting Friday night. They had breakfast a few weeks ago.
Noah told his father he had “given his life to Christ and was baptized.” Noah wanted to be involved in the ministry and shared his favorite verses from Proverbs.
“I could hear the joy in his voice,” Scot Taylor said.
His father said his son did not deserve to be killed. The father will never get to see what kind of life his son would have or never have grandchildren from Noah.
Noah’s friend, Tonny Duenas, met Noah when they worked together in Smyrna and invited him to LifePoint Church in Smyrna. Noah became part of the Spanish ministry at the church.
“He was growing up in his faith,” Duenas said of Noah. “I know he’s in a better place now.”
Scot Taylor agreed.
“My son, I know, is in a better place,” Scot Taylor said. “That’s what gives me peace.”

His mother described him as “an amazing and loving son. I am at a loss for words.”

Dash cam videos from drivers traveling on Interstate 24 Saturday morning are requested for the murder of a Rutherford County man, a Rutherford County Sheriff’s detective said.

Driver Noah Taylor, 22, of Smyrna, was killed while driving about 7:30 a.m. Saturday on Interstate 24 near Waldron Road toward Nashville, said Detective Thomas Burnett.

Taylor’s family members are offering a $2,000 reward.
“Crime Stoppers is offering a reward up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the suspect responsible,” Burnett said.
