Rutherford: Pop Up Computer Scam Alert

A Rutherford County man noticed a pop-up on his computer about a virus with instructions to click to get rid of the virus.
After he clicked on the pop-up, he received a call from someone falsely claiming to be Deputy Brandon Walls of the Sheriff’s Office, who does not work at the Sheriff’s Office.
The potential scammer told the man he had illegal porn on his computer and instructed him if he wanted to get rid of a federal arrest warrant, he must give the scammer his Social Security number.
His stepdaughter heard the conversation and told him to “hang up.” He hung up.
Fortunately, she stopped him from giving personal information to the scammer.
If you receive a similar call, follow the stepdaughter’s advice: “hang up.”
People can’t avoid a lawful arrest by giving their Social Security number.
Please don’t fall from this attempt to get your money.
